Upgrade Citrix XenServer 5.5 to 5.6 FP 1

Bookmark and Share

With the release of XenServer 5.6 Feature Pack 1 it was due time to upgrade my Homelab to the latest version. So eagerly I started to burn the downloaded iso files for the install and linux supplement pack CDs and burned the ISO files to CDs. With a quick scan through the Admin Guide, I figured I understood the process and made my first mistake.

I performed the upgrade in the wrong order, so had to do some troubleshooting.

A handy list to keep closeby is the shortcurt key list for Remote Desktop Connections and Citrix Sessions. So just to make sure I know where to find it, I’m posting the list on my site.

If you want to check out the Synergy keynotes, super session or other recorded presentations, you can go to the Synergy 2010 Channel on Citrix TV.

For me a great way to check out the thursday afternoon sessions I missed in order to be at the airport in time for my flight back home.

Two of the sessions I attended are already available:

I especially likes the demo’s of the Plenary session and enjoyed the ‘behind-the-scenes’ view of the crystal ball. Guess there is alot more exciting new technologies and solutions ahead of us!

Citrix Synergy 2010

This year, I’m attending the Citrix Synergy 2010 in Berlin. The first European Citrix Synergy event ever. With it being sold out, it sure is a great success, which will definately will get a follow up next year.

With a two da head start as a partner on the Summit, I’ve already had the opportunity to follow some great Hands-on Learning Labs on

  • Troubleshooting XenServer: Which offered some great xeCLI and linux commands to check the health of your Hypervisor and optimize it’s configuration.
  • XenClient: The new Desktop Hypervisor that wasn’t as stable (using RC 2) as a multitasker like me, would like it to be.
  • XenDesktop 5: The soon to be released latest version of Citrix’s VDI solution. This definiately has lots of improvements and new Architectural designs. I loved having fun with it today.

And if that is not enough great news, I also was offered the change to take a free exam and passed the 1y0-A18 Administration XenApp 6 exam, which makes my XenApp certification up-to-date again.

Today Mark Templeton also held a great keynote, which was streamed live through the Synergy website, so all that couldn’t attend would still be able to check out the latest news from Citrix. With some great news about HDFaces being the free HD Video addition to GoToMeeting, The new Feature Pack for XenServer 5.6, The anouncement of XenDesktop 5, The great Cloud connectors that are build to make the Receiver be the universal interface to combine Single SignOn, SaaS, Web and local DataCenter applications for your user, giving your user a great Application and Infrastructure portal for the environment it wants to use today.
A great innovative and creative view on combining new technologies to offer users a great workplace.
But you can check out the latest buzz yourself: http://www.citrixsynergy.com/buzz.html

If you want to see for yourself what Synergy Berlin is all about, you can always, check the live stream: http://www.livestream.com/citrixsynergy1

So with this quick stream of my impressions and thoughts about Synergy I’m gonna leave you for now and hopefully find the time for a quick update tomorrow.

Unattended installation of a Domain Controller

So far I’ve written about the Homelab hardware I’ve purchased and some basic configurations for my Storage and XenServers. And with the post on Sysprepping a Windows 2008 Server, I’m ready to build my Windows 2008 Test environment. With a (sysprepped) Windows 2008 Template for my VMs, I can easily clone the needed Servers and get my lab up and running and build a Windows Domain with multiple Servers and ServerRoles.

The first step in building my Windows Domain is to convert a Windows Server 2008 Member Server into a Domain Controller with the dcpromo.exe command.

This post is my own personal mental note for the unattended installation of my Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers.
